Some explanation may be needed here.

When I was only a wee nipper we had an anthology of the "What Katy Did" books. There were four (What Katy Did, What Katy Did At School, What Katy Did Next and Clover). Now, to be fair, I've only roughly sketched things so far. But it was and is my intention to follow the same idea in my Polly/Mal arch. So ( Read more... )

Did you mean to change that?

Ok, I'm relieved to say I didn't know any of this except for the one sentence you posted once (and the bits that I think were in some drabble or other).

Also, I'm sure this was observed before, but we are really mean to our characters, especially Mal for some reason. Passing thoughts: whoa, Sally really is awfully forward. Not that she wouldn't do it, copper always on duty and all that. But damnit, I'd have been pissed as well. Point the second, whoa Mal! I'm always tempted to say that great big outbursts of emotion are not her style, but one, I often have to actively distract myself from writing her like a Vulcan w/ sarcasm gene, and two, extraordinary circumstances, seems more than justified.

But hasn't she left the army? Is one still allowed to wear uniform if one has left the army? (especially to shady bars, um. Ok, this raises the question whether Mal would care)

Now I'm all sad, but seems like I can only blame myself :( Well-done, as always.

PS oh hai, can I have a Shufti tag up

I can't think of the dates! Discworld dates are haaaaaaard. *end whine*

We are mean. Really really mean.

I'm using Sally as that "stranger on a train" thing. There has to be SOMEONE to be there when Mal first starts grieving. And she's useful later. As to the explosion of angst, well... she had to do it sometime. And later she'll deny it and be merely all vulcan again. But I have her heal eventually, so she has to react to her grief at some point. And the bar is not shady. It's Beirs.

Mal has not left the Army yet. She is currently on compassionate leave. The letters go 1. "You wrote what?" 2. "I left the army".

Yep. I originally had June 6th somewhere in there, then I though, isn't that Grune on Discworld?, then I thought, is that the same as June?, then I thought, doesn't Discworld have eight days inna week?, then I gave up. No DW dates for meee.

The funny thing is that Mal isn't Vulcan at all in MR! Just not easily surprised. She's silly, makes bad jokes, and tends towards the theatrical in her demeanour. It must be the pointed ears that are fooling me, and those aren't even canon. Sigh.

I'm trying to remember which one was Biers, Doesn't sound like the cocktail bar...

Yes, butbut, it's only after the I "left the army" letter that she goes to AM, no mention before that. Am I missing something?

But there would be dates on a tombstone! So yeah. [dates] - [dates] for me.

Yeah. What you said. Non of the vampires are unemotional. She'd just reserved and a private person, as I expect many Black Ribboners are. Trying to keep a low profile etc.

Biers is the "odd" bar in AM. Susan goes to it in Thief of Time, Angua drinks there etc.

After the "leaves the army" letter, Mal goes to AM to live permanently. This is a short leave only. She's drifting, and we all know that all roads lead to AM. So she ends up there to drink and drink heavily.
