[Goal #2] Get employed!

Aug 02, 2006 21:16

It's been a year now since my contract ended with Hirono-machi. For one year, I could have made a cool tax-free $36k if I had re-signed. Instead I resigned, and for one year, I made $0. It's definitely not something I'm proud of or like to admit, but maybe admitting my shortcomings will empower me to overcome them. I feel the power as we speak ( Read more... )

"Happiness can't be bought" and "I don't care about the money."
Is this your Philosophy?

By the way, I resemble your icon (=Salaryman - Don't mess with me!)
hahaha (^o^)

That's my old philosophy. My new philosophy is to be happy, I need freedom. To have freedom, I need money. Do you agree? :)

Oh, do you look like Salaryman Kintaro? "Salaryman wo namen ja ne yo!" = "Don't mess with a salaryman!" in English. ;)

Are you looking for teaching work? Or other?
If it is just a job you are looking for, try an agency. I worked for Spherion, and another is Adecco. They dont cost anything and work really hard for you.

Thanks for the advice! I'm looking for work as an ESL teacher . . I'll try the agencies if my "in-person" tactic doesn't work. According to my job hunting book though, only 5% of those applying through agencies actually find a job, though it goes up to 30% if you're a woman. Huh?

Not to sound confrontational, but you spent a YEAR not working?! Why?

That question came up in my first interview, too. XD

I took a break till December to study Japanese. Then I went to school till May, wrecked my knees in Vegas and couldn't walk much for a month. I finally started job hunting in June when I got better, and soon learned how competitive the ESL teaching positions were. :P

As far a money vs. happiness goes, don't forget that work is usually 8 hours per day, 5 days per week. That is half of your weekday waking hours thus if you are not happy at your job, you are likely spending half of each day miserable followed by returning home grumpy. You need a good job that pays well to be truly happy. If you can't find a good ESL job, why not go back to UBC for 4 months to take their ESL certificate upgrade course (12 credits). That is what I am earning now and it is actually pretty fun.

Actually, I'm thinking of taking a TEFL course in the near future . . I think most ESL schools want that so maybe that's why I'm not getting callbacks.

Yeah, that's why I'm looking for a job that'll keep me happy. I was working 12 hours a day in Japan but I was very happy. Then again, I used to work cash 4 hours a day and was very unhappy . .
