It's a quiet service, simple and joyful (the latter at least on the part of the man performing it). As usual, Father Mulcahy tries to keep the mass as nondenominational as possible, though he certainly knows his Roman Catholic traditions better than any others; he wears his full vestments and he does offer the Eucharist to anyone who would like to ( Read more... )

Gus hadn't really been listening to any of it. He'd wandered in by mistake, trying to find the library to return a book, and with several people turning back to look at him, he'd feel like an idiot if he walked back out.

He's not partaking in the refreshment table, but it doesn't take a psychic to see that something's been troubling him.

"Hello. Or should that be Merry Christmas?" If so, it's not exactly a heartfelt greeting.

Gus looks up at the owner of the voice. "Yeah, you too."

Oh, he's just bursting with holiday cheer right now.

"Not a fan of the day, or of the priest?" Or of the refreshments, maybe, since they are pretty bland (even for someone not into eating or drinking for pleasure).

He has no idea why he came. Maybe because the holidays are lonely. Maybe because in a place like this, the idea that the divine might truly exist is less outlandish. Maybe because he was hoping to find a fiery man of God for a debate (only to see that this priest is unlikely to ever start a holy war). Or maybe because when he was a boy, he was at mass (like it or not).

The service wasn't bad, all things considered. Nothing that would offend anyone, unless you are offended by a lack of fire and brimstone or by the very existence of the Catholic Church. The priest didn't do badly, given that it was clear he doesn't know most of the attendees. And the priest's faith seems honest. That's a nice change from the nuns and the charlatans of Hub City.

The service done, Charlie makes himself some tea, and nibbles at a cookie.

She's never been a regular in attendance at church, but there's something about going to a service on Christmas that draws her in every year.

She comes in a little late after news of it circulating around the bar finally reaches her ears, but finds a good seat nevertheless; her voice is soft but clear during the hymns, and she listens attentively to the sermon, hands gently folded in her lap.

She'll be standing in the doorway after the service ends to light a quick cigarette, attempting to discreetly blow smoke away from and not into the room.

"No offense, but I have it on great authority that can kill you." Ah, yes, the always chipper and cheerful Charlie.

"You and the surgeon general."

Funny how that doesn't seem to stop her.

"In my case, my information is first hand." At least second hand smoke can't kill him again. (He hopes.)

In Ellen's world it's not Christmas yet, and won't be for some time. She doesn't know how they celebrate it on the surface- assuming that they do; so far the only clergyman she's met up top is Confessor Cromwell, and he's not really right in the head. But she was very much relieved to see that there was at least someone of a denomination whose name she knew here, even if there weren't any Catholics back in the Vault. So she's more than happy to attend the service, and to participate as best she can. She misses Reverend Avellone a great deal. At least, for now, there's this- and whoever else might be attending.

Of course Daniel is here, and of course he's wearing old green BDU's, a vest, and muddy boots. He is also carrying a few weapons of the gun and Zat variety. He's not much for the religious thing, but Christmas is an exception.
