The Smithsonian Folklife Festival started yesterday down on the Mall and runs this weekend and next weekend. This year's themes are Bhutan, NASA (NASA has a folklife?) and TEXAS, the Best State Ever. This means lots of dancing to music played by guys in Stetsons and boots, samples of Texas wine (yes, there is such a thing), and best of all, FOOD ( Read more... )

ZOMG KOLACHE!!!!! I haven't had them in ages. My very first job was working in the deli/bakery of a grocery store in Wisconsin, and they had kolaches. I was HOOKED. Deeee-lish. I only ever had the fruit ones, tho...I'm imagining bacon kolache now and drooling.

I think the meat ones are the Texanized version of the original. I'm pretty sure the sausage-jalapeno kind didn't come over from the Old Country.

Its hard for me to imagine a world with no kolaches. Theres like 4 kolache shops around the corner from my apartment.
