I said this to Step yesterday, they won't allow anybody to be imagined outside what was written in the books.
If you write a 25 year old Ron they want you to write him in keeping with his 18 year old self we leave in DH or his father of two self from the epilogue.
I bet you they would reject fic about Ron talking to his 20 year old son because Hugo is being written out of character.
WE HAVE NO CHARACTER FOR 20 YEAR OLD HUGO!
How can they claim James Potter is or isn't anything? He was underwritten.
They judge fics and reject on canon but what they really mean is 'rejecting this on the basis of the fanon James Potter that I like'
And they aren't the biggest fanfic site, they just don't let people delete their accounts. Most of the people subscribed there don't read or post there anymore.
Well the largest reader traffic and most prolific postings will probably be ff.net but the quality isn't consistent.
I really don't like the whole thing of one archive being THE archive to be. I've read people talking on message boards about reccing good fanfics and when somebody recced something off site they got the response 'I don't read anything if it's not archived on Checkmated'
That is the snobbery we can do without, especially considering the characterisation of some of the stuff they do accept.
I've actually written to them to ask them to delete my account and they ignored me. When I wrote again and worded my request much harsher I got a reply telling me to show some manners. I'm still a member of a site I dislike and want my name removed from. I don't know any other sites that do that.
Does seem a bit harsh, given that the point of the story was James, in the awkwardness and embarrassment of the moment, digging a hole for himself by continually saying the wrong thing when the smart thing to do would have been to shut up. I suspect most of us have been there.
I'm in the middle of a shockingly canon story and was considering submitting it at CM when done, just to see. Now I'm not even sure if I should bother, seeing they'll even reject YOU. Jeebus. I'm sure they'd find plenty of reasons why my Ron should never treat my Hermione the way he does, lol. Maybe I should do it just for entertainment purposes.
