The events of the past week had been more than disconcerting. After being released from the Fourth Division come Thursday morning, Shuuhei had spent most of his time in his office, catching up on the paperwork that Fujita had not delivered to him while he was under Unohana-taichou's care. The pain in his chest from the beating Kensei had given him was still there, and though he had a few bandages and a bit of a limp, he was well enough to continue running his Division, as long as he did not decide to go out and fight more Hollows right then. It was the best of outcomes either way ( ... )

He met Shuuhei's gaze as he stepped through the doorway, then slid the door closed behind him and bowed his head politely before approaching the desk.

"Muguruma-san is fine," he said, lifting a hand to silently urge the older man to sit. Renji had heard just how badly Kensei had injured him; it was laudable he was in the office at all! Though it wasn't like Renji a poster child for convalescents everywhere... Leaning on the edge of Shuuhei's desk, Renji stared down at the wood a moment. "He's been patched up, if he was even hurt much, and...well mostly he's just a little stir-crazy," he explained, and looked back up at Shuuhei then. "He's...worried he'll be executed," he admitted, "but I ain't gonna let that happen. This ain't his fault."

He let go of the desk then and folded his arms over his chest, frowning.

"How about you?" he asked, brows lifted. "I heard you put up one helluva fight; you doin' okay?"

Shuuhei only sat back down when Renji spoke, satisfied that the other man was uninjured. Not that he thought he had unleashed some amazing attack that would scar Kensei for life, but he had swung him around a bit and attempted to break off his mask. It was a dangerous risk to take, what with the destruction of the mask marking the end of Hollows. He had only hoped it would cure the man of that particular Hollow, but one could never tell. No, he was just relieved that Kensei was all right, and his more relaxed features said so ( ... )

"Aw, to hell with Central," Renji snarled, waving a hand. "They condemned Urahara-san and the Vaizard a hundred years ago, and I don't doubt this new batch may well look to do the same."

He hooked his foot around the leg of the nearest chair and tugged it forward to flop backward into it, folding his arms over his chest and giving Shuuhei a grin.

"Eh, potayto potahto," he grunted with a shrug. "You engaged a full-blown Vaizard-Hollow and lived to tell about it; I say that's one helluva fight whether ya won it or not." He blew out a sigh and shook his head. "Rikichi got the shit beat outta him," he mused, worry creasing his brow. "I thought for sure he was done for, for a second there," he confessed with a nervous laugh; "he was..." He shook his head, clearing his throat. "A-anyway ( ... )

Everyone was thinking it, Renji just said it. That did not sway Shuuhei's opinion on the matter, though. Ukitake was far more skeptical of Central 46, more so than Yamamoto ever was. Surely as long as this incident stayed as isolated as possible, they could keep some sense of control over it. That was what he hoped, anyway.

He frowned slightly at that before giving a small smile. "Guess that hard head of yours is finally rubbing off on him." Rikichi was really a sweet kid, but it was hard to see him as anything but a kid in that sense. He had been Renji's shadow for years, and though he had considerably improved, he still seemed like Renji: The Mini Version. Or something like that ( ... )
