Rai would not go so far as to say that he was afraid, but he certainly was concerned. Never had he encountered such a complete dearth of plus souls, and it just didn't make any sense ( ... )

Hitsugaya nodded at Okada's approach, senses still cast wide and searching for... anything really. He didn't know what exactly. Okada had said there were no plus souls and, for now, Hitsugaya couldn't find any. Hollows, he could sense. Plus souls weren't around.

That was unusual. That was very unusual.

With a soft grunt, Hitsugaya turned his attention to focus on Okada. (But not solely; if there was one thing he'd learned, it was to stay on one's toes-- at all times -- in the Living World.) "I want your squad to head back through the Senkaimon." He wouldn't have injuries to deal with. Not on top of unusual activity.

"Then you're coming with me." Oh, that hurt him to say. He didn't like working with Okada. "I want to check on a few things."

That the squad was to return was a relief. Things were getting a bit too dangerous here for them to stay. And Rai did not balk at the thought of staying himself; hey, it was part of the job. Not to mention that he wasn't in as much peril as an unseated shinigami.

"Of course."

He spoke the release command as soon as his sword was free of the sheath, and in the next breath whispered the proper incantation, twisting the blade in the air. As he ordered the squad through, Mitsora no Sansai pouted that this had better not be the last time she got released today. Rai couldn't help but roll his eyes at this. Crazy woman. She was never satisfied.

When the Senkaimon closed, he dismissed shikai and sheathed the blade again, turning back to his captain. He couldn't deny that he was curious as to why there seemed to be a sudden absence of plus souls. "Ready when you are, sir."

While Okada opened the gate and sent the squad home, Hitsugaya stood apart, arms crossed and watching around them. He didn't want to tempt fate and remain unaware. That would be the time when something would attack. He turned when Okada stepped up beside him and nodded.

The kid had been... almost docile. That was strange. So very strange.

"Where were the most aggressive Hollows?" That seemed like the place to start. It was their job, after all, to take care of such things. "We'll start there."

If Rai had known how his captain had just thought of him, he would have laughed. The sheer irony of Hitsugaya-taichou thinking of him as a kid would be too much for him to take, even on such a serious occasion ( ... )
