It wasn't hard to wait until she'd met with the Captain and Ichigo had gone through his own official processes and everything was as it should be before she went to see Ichigo. Knowing he was here, alive, not noticeably mutilated-that made it easier. Which didn't mean that she liked it, but she could do it.

After she was free from obligations for the day, however, she made a beeline to his quarters, not dropping out of flash step the entire time. His window was conveniently open, so she landed there instead of taking the long way around through the door, pausing for a moment before essentially launching herself at him. She took care not to drop all her weight on him like he was a landing cushion, but she needed to see and feel that he was real.

He'd drifted into a half-sleep, and fast as she approached, her reiatsu didn't immediately pull at his somnolent senses. Even if it had, it was much like the wind from the veranda; cool and gentle and soothing, not a cause for alarm.

His breath still wheezed out in a surprised gasp, his eyes flying open as she tumbled on top of him. With a noise that was half a laugh, half a huff, he hauled her close, one hand splaying gently over her head and tucking it into the curve of his throat.

Then he sighed, the exhalation taking the lingering tension out of him with it, and just held her there, arms steady and warm around her. "Hey, you."

"Hi," she mumbled into his throat, not particularly bothered that her face was smooshed into it. She settled herself a little, correct for the slightly awkward placement of a knee, and elbow. Possibly it would be a good idea to pull back and actually look at him, but she didn't feel like that. "You're okay."

Ichigo let his head fall back bonelessly, not moving as she shifted into a more comfortable position.

"Yeah, an' I've got a few high-ranked officers backin' that up. They had to make sure we didn't come back with anythin' that was supposed to stay there. 'S why I took so long."

His heart leapt slightly at her nearness, but it was all calm and comfortable for now, a heavy and slow stirring rather than the flood of emotion he'd perhaps expected. It seemed the mere process of understanding that he was here took up all his capacity at the moment.

"And you? All right, too?"

"I know." She nodded, knowing he'd feel that even if he couldn't see it. "It's important that you did." Duty came first, always.

This was what she'd missed, beyond the worry over his and Kensei's condition; the comfortable companionship, enjoying the closeness whether or not they did anything with it.

"I'm fine," she said, and did prop herself up this time so they could look at each other. "Busy, but that's my own doing. And it's not anything new."
