Renji knew better than to not check in with Kira around Ichimaru's birthday. Just as Hinamori was especially not herself on her former captain's birthday, Kira was always...a tad out of sorts come the second week of September. He figured this year would be no exception--in fact, he woudln't have been at all surprised if things were worse this year than before, after the crap Ichimaru had pulled lately. He would have to check up on Kira when he got back, without fail ( ... )

Izuru was stepping forward rather purposefully, but despite all the walking he was doing, the trees were still safe off in the distance. He could almost smell the persimmons in the air, spicey and sickly sweet as they ripened in the hot sun. Twice a year he'd had to put up with it. Twice a year the smell of those godawful trees whisper insidiously out into the Third Division and make his life a misery. Nobody else seemed to care. They thought it was nice that the 3rd Division smelt as sweet as the 6th. They came into his office and chatted to him about how the persimmons would be ripened soon, and somehow didn't notice his frown growing deeper the closer it got.

But last year -- last year -- terrible, terrible things had happened when the persimmons were ripe, and he didn't want to think about it ever, ever again ( ... )

Renji was glad Kira surrendered the blade without a fight--the last thing he needed was for Kira to accidentally run someone (or himself) through. Letting go of Kira's arm just long enough to stab Wabisuke's tip into the soft dirt of the yard (with a quiet apology, though the spirit was long gone), Renji whirled back to Kira and darted forward when the younger man moved toward the trees with renewed fervor. Renji knew exactly what he was planning, and he just couldn't allow it.

"W-wait, Kira, don't take it out on the trees, man," he chided. "They didn't do nothin' wrong." He knew Kira hated those trees--he'd hated them ever since Ichimaru's betrayal, as if they had personally wronged him somehow. He didn't quite understand it, but...well, Renji didn't really know how it felt to be betrayed by one's own captain. As much at-odds as he and Byakuya often were, even as they'd crossed blades, Byakuya had never betrayed him.

Well...there was that one time he'd thrown him in jail half-dead, but...that didn't really count, did it?"Ki- ( ... )

"You don't know what it's like!" Izuru cried, flailing at his friend as he was held off again. He stomped his foot in irritation, shoulders stiffening, his hands falling into fists at his sides as he glowered at Renji furiously. It didn't come off as well, because he couldn't get him to come into focus either.

Renji was perfectly cohesive, of course. The trees hadn't done it, and they couldn't undo it either, but at least he'd feel like he was getting back at Ichimaru even a little bit, and right now he felt so damned powerless! Even if it wasn't for not having Wabisuke any more - just an empty sword that looked like him - he was already powerless before then. Aizen had won, and Gin skittered around like he owned the place. They had everything they'd ever wanted. Oh, of course there was a part of him that was sore that he wasn't strong enough to stop it from happening in the first place, but there was a furious part of him that felt as though he were a man trapped inside a dog's body, barking and barking but never able to escape the ( ... )

Renji winced as Kira howled and flailed and tried his damndest to scowl at him, but it didn't quite come across right, because his eyes were still a little crossed and his mouth pulled off to one side like maybe he'd had dental surgery an hour ago. Kira was right--Renji didn't know what it was like. But he couldn't imagine that destroying nature would alleviate Kira's ire with his ex-captain.

Squeezing Kira's shoulders again and then releasing him, Renji shook his head.

"Look, Kira, tearin' down those trees ain't gonna make Ichimaru go away," he said. "In fact, the way he prances around here like he owns the fuckin' place, he might come back to plant more just to spite you, so...let's not do this, okay?" It was the same argument he usually used, and it usually worked. Because...it would have been just like Ichimaru to get offended that his trees had been removed, even if they had a good reason for it, and replant the whole orchard bigger than before ( ... )
