hard core graphic novel reading

Jul 29, 2010 22:46

Nothing like 20 hours in a car to force a person to finally crack open all those graphic novels sitting there.
On to the graphic novels... )

graphic novels, book reviews

Your music--ha. That has been the soundtrack of my LIFE ever since seeing Wicked in SF a few weeks ago. (It was SO AMAZING. It is my Current Obsession. Also, just for the Record, Marcie Dodd is amazing. She was our Elphie.)

Also, I need to read more GNs. *sigh*

For my birthday, mr. checkers gave me a choice of tickets to Wicked or a netbook. I chose the netbook, but am still not sure I made the right choice...

Wow! I'm very impressed. And feeling like I need to check out the graphic novel section of the library :)

You should! See if you can find Town of Evening Calm. It's wonderful.

I have been on a Marvel kick lately (Young Avengers, Hulk, Avengers: The Initiative). I think I will check some of these out as a change of pace!

And I need to read more superheroes--I'm sadly lacking in them. Do you have any recommendations? Esp. for middle and high school?

Recent Marvel series about teenage hero groups are kind of my thing ( ... )

The other thing I mentioned up above, Avengers: The Initiative, is actually a series about mostly-teenage superpowers at this boot camp for supers, after the Registration Act from Civil War goes through. I would recommend it because I like it a lot, but it's a lot more violent than Young Avengers or Runaways. So. I probably wouldn't.

Howevever, it have a pale-faced emo boy called TRAUMA in it. TRAUMA! His introductory panel made me laugh for several minutes:

He turns into people's nightmares. AND THEN HE HONES HIS SKILL AND BECOMES A COUNSELOR. This makes me experience laughter, joy, and a sort of ironical feeling in my ribs. But it's pretty nasty for a middle school library.

Oh, do! Rapunzel's Revenge by Shannon Hale is a great kids' book to start with. Or Marvels, which is a fantastic superhero book.

Not sure how far you are into Vampire Knight, but eventually it involves incest as well, rather prominently (one of the main romances of the series), just fair warning.

Also, There are a few webcomics that have come out in print and won some ALA awards. No doubt you have already read them, but if you haven't, might I suggest Gunnerkrigg Court, and Lackadaisy. though Lackadaisy would have to be for older teens I guess, despite the cute, disney-esque cat characters.

Incest??? I think I'll probably leave Vampire Knight at the original 3 volumes, then, and give the rest a pass. A bunch of younger students have been checking them out and I'm not sure that's a good match. I do think the sexual implications are so subtle that it will go over the heads of many younger readers, but still.

I've been wanting to read Gunnerkrigg Court! I've heard great things about it. There's a copy in the library, I need to grab it.

Nice to see you on LJ. :)
