[Good afternoon, Route! After eloping with with his psycho ex-girlfriend, nursing his sick best friend and generally taking care of a few obligations, Phoenix has finally popped back up on the radar! And -- hey, what's this? When the feed opens, the guy is actually smiling!

...well, to be fair, there's still an incredible amount of strain in his ( Read more... )

[After an intense session of acting like a Maya in pursuit of burgers and Steel Samurai goods, Edgeworth had somehow convinced Phoenix and Dahlia to let him tag along, since he was still extremely cautious about these two being anywhere alone, and he's sticking close to Dahlia, though his motives are well-hidden.

His fever had gone down, and he was feeling better. Being cooped up in that room wouldn't have done him any good, anyway, so he stands a bit away from Phoenix and Dahlia with Pess, watching.]

...The way he put it was really complicated and rushed, but..

Mr. von Karma took me in. That was probably the person my mother mentioned, who offered us a place to stay in Germany. He was the one who pulled the strings behind the murder of Mr. Hammond, in my future, and... he was trying to frame me, I think?

[Another nod, but...] It was more than that.

von Karma...he knew that he thought you killed your father. Framing you for Hammond's murder was just one part of his plan.

...he knew that, if that plan failed, you would eventually confess to being your father's murderer. He thought it was win-win.

[At this, you can see Phoenix's hand start to clench, and there's anger in his eyes. The depths to which von Karma sunk in order to ruin Miles's life never failed to broil Phoenix's blood, and it took a LOT to make Phoenix angry.]

But--

....what did he have to gain from that? Taking me in, having me become a prosecutor, and eventually framing me. What was in it for him, to have done that?

[It will take a while for the anger to sink in. Right now, this and Gumshoe's stories have just left him... shocked. Shocked beyond belief.]

He wanted revenge.

[It was as simple as that.]

Killing your father...it wasn't enough. Not for him.

He wanted to turn you into everything your father wasn't, and then, finally, send you spiraling down.

...it was horrible.

[Well, hey, Phoenix can get plenty angry for them both.]

...Because I shot him. Because-- because my father had.. because he proved that Mr. von Karma forged that evidence.

[It suddenly clicked in his mind. Why had von Karma gone as far as he's said to have gone? Edgeworth... thought he understood why, now.]

No matter the reason, it was awful. von Karma ruined so many lives...just to get his revenge. [Phoenix...is not amused. Not in the slightest.]

[He's suddenly struck by a... strange feeling of sadness. He was highly relieved that his nightmares weren't true, but more than feeling hatred towards von Karma, he felt.. just this sense of loss. And he falls silent, his hands clasped tightly as he stares at his feet, trying to take this all in.]

[This can't have been easy for Edgeworth to hear. He had a hard time dealing with it in Phoenix's time, and that was FIFTEEN YEARS after the fact.

While Phoenix still isn't sure how to react to the things this child Edgeworth does, he does feel like he should at least offer a comforting (if awkward) squeeze of Miles's shoulder. The sadness is mimicked in Phoenix's eyes, too.]

...I'm sorry, Edgeworth. I meant to tell you earlier, but...

[Edgeworth is still silent, his eyes on the ground. It was hard for him to believe that something like this could have happened. He's relieved he wasn't the one who murdered Gregory, but the thought that, if he went home, he would have to face this Manfred von Karma...

The thought made him shudder.]
