With a little over half an hour to go at work this morning and all the power went out. Luckily it's light now at 6:30 am so we weren't completely in the dark once we opened the curtains. Emergency lighting only in the corridors and thats not enough to even read by. All the fire doors closed automatically. Over in IRC they couldn't even open the ( Read more... )

Er... Fire doors CLOSING when the power goes out? What kind of death trap IS that? o_O

Natürlich ist das richtig, wenn sie (sperrangelweit) offen sind. Wenn ein Feuer ausbricht, dann halten die das Feuer zurück, aber nur wenn sie geschlossen sind. Geschlossen heißt nicht verriegelt, man kann sie wie jede Tür öffnen und sie schließen dann automatisch wieder. Das ist bei uns genauso... :)

I guess the "couldn't open the external doors" confused me. Does Chaypeta speak German?

No, she does not...

...and the external doors should be able to be opened - at least from the inside - and that really is a fire-trap if they do not open. But closing fire doors is normal - that is what they are supposed to do :)

...and that with an almost brand new building (IIRC it is about three years old, isn't it?)
