Why can't the U.S. say, "We were wrong"?

Ok, I admit that I don't know the whole story, as I don't care for the "news". However, it doesn't seem to me like burning dead bodies is a particularly bad thing to do. Live bodies, perhaps. But dead soldiers? If anything is wrong, it was killing them in the first place. Many cultures accept burning as appropriate means of disposal. I intend to be creamated when I die. Is the big fuss that they weren't buried in accord with Middle Eastern standards? Did this act violate a treaty of some sort? I am also inclined to think that the taunting is worse than the burning.
