It was a little confusing at first, then it all made sense. Sam wanted to face Raphael, to end the issue and the conflict. Dean really needs to listen better!
I like that Sam chose freedom, but freedom from the cage was not simple, and the cage was actually bliss. I always thought it would be interesting if Sam was returned to Earth, but had been in a more peaceful place.
