Conversations with Myself

Sep 08, 2010 21:03

Me: I would like to have another cookie

Myself: But right now you feel good.  And if you have another cookie you will feel bad.  Which would you rather feel, bad or good?

Me: I would rather have another cookie.

But I did not have another cookie!  So I win.

Except for the part of me that still wants a cookie.

whatever

You can give me that cookie and then you won't be tempted.

I have this conversation with myself all the time, except mine always end with: "I had another cookie and now I feel bad. Maybe another cookie will make me care less."

Oh yeah, I've had that conversation.

Also the one that goes: There are only x number of cookies left. I should probably eat all of them RIGHT NOW, even though I don't actually want all of them.

It's one of the worst feelings in the world: to be eating a cookie, know that you don't want it, it doesn't taste good, and you are not enjoying the process at all, but then to continue eating it anyway.

If I'm conscious enough about what I'm doing (which I'm usually not), the fifteen minute rule often works for me--as in, if I still want a cookie in fifteen minutes, I'll have one. I would like to try to make that work more often.
