He'd died. Jack was absolutely sure of that. He'd stood up to the Dalek, and he'd felt the shot, felt his heart stop, if that was possible. But here he was, heart beating and blood pumping and eyes open. His eyes. What was he seeing? There weren't Daleks. He couldn't hear them, either.
He was just surrounded by dust.
His brain lingered on this only a moment before he thought of the Doctor. The thought made him rise, scramble down the hallway and towards the TARDIS, for the moment unaware of just how much dust there now was around him. A few moments later he finally burst through the door, rushing inside the TARDIS.
The Doctor smiled slightly when Jack burst through the door. Even though he could feel it had gone wrong...that he'd made Jack wrong. The glow was disappearing from the Doctor's eyes, but he could see it shining through his skin. He could feel it burning.
"I'm sorry, Jack. I was gonna take you to so many places. Barcelona. Ever been to Barcelona? The planet, not the city. You'd love it, fantastic place. They've got dogs with no noses!"
He was laughing, but there wasn't really any humour in it.
"Imagine how many times a day you end up telling that joke, and it’s still funny."
Jack's relief at finding the Doctor was painfully short-lived. He could tell something was wrong, and it scared him. Nothing should be wrong; it was the Doctor. Even if Jack died.....he wasn't supposed to be the one to get hurt, not now.
He approached slowly, almost weary. "I don't suppose you're glowing from a bright idea..." Like the Doctor's, his own voice lacked any humor.

The glow increased instantly, almost like an electric shock exploding through his body as he was thrown backwards.
"I absorbed all the energy from the Time Vortex--no one's meant to do that. Every cell in my body's dying."
