The Beating of My Heart

Aug 24, 2010 10:26

He doesn’t know that I can still see him when I close my eyes.

Sometimes I think your heart beats only when there’s a case, he once joked to me.

He is, of course, referring to my periods of stagnation where I might lie for days unmoving on the settee. But he could not be more mistaken in his observation.

My heart beats for him and him alone.

It hurt to write, too.

Listen, I promise you my next fic (getting posted next Monday) has an ending that will go down like a shot of corn syrup.

I wish I'd made this one, but I didn't. I am ridiculously easy and accepting of most versions of Holmes and Watson, though. I get a slightly different satisfaction from each. The Granada version is the version I have the least exposure to at the moment, as I am slowly renting it on DVD. :)

Oh, man, so heart-breakingly beautiful. Poor Holmes.

I know. If you come back on Monday, you'll see an entirely different Holmes and he will make it all better. Swear.

Oh, ouch. Gorgeous and painful and wonderfully, achingly sad. And the ending... *sniff*

Lovely work.

Thank you. I usually favor a happy ending, but I was bitten by the melancholy bug and well, poor Holmes had to pay for it.

I haven't had time for play here for WEEKS, but I've been checking in every few days or so to see if you posted the story you mentioned - today I was lucky! This was heartbreakingly good. I like the first part of it best (I'm a sucker for unrequited longing: "Explaining it to him is like making love. Every detail I share is calculated to invoke reaction." geez, that's good!), but even though I adore happy endings, this was so well done that I was absorbed in spite of the fact that I could tell there would be no time for a happy ending. (I'm hopeful though - when Holmes returns, Watson won't be able to deny him any longer, right?) I think you did a marvelous job of capturing a Watson that is devoted to Holmes but loves his wife as well, in a very realistic way (poor Victorian boys).

Thanks for chiming in, it's great to hear from you!

This still isn't the story I've been working on. That one's going up on Monday and I'm just polishing it up right now (I think it will be a three-parter and the ending is verrrrrrry different from the one you just read). For some odd reason, I had to write this one to be able to finish the other. Perhaps someone can explain it to me after they've read both.

I adore happy endings, too, so I'm all the more mystified as to why I had to end it the way I did.

Anyway, I'm so glad you enjoyed this (despite the heartbreak) and that you took the time to tell me. I'm really excited to post the big one next week!

OOOO! Now I'm really pleased! Something to read today AND something to look forward to! I'm glad to hear that the next one will have a different sort of ending (I can appreciate the angst, but give me a happy ending and I'm a truly happy girl), and I can't WAIT to read it.
