Who Series 7 Part 1 Review

Sep 30, 2012 15:02

I haven't given my thoughts or feelings on any episodes so far, mainly due to the fact that the season has been slightly disappointing in the main. I'm not normally a critical person, and honestly, it's probably affected by the bleh statements of more critical viewers than I.

most definitely spoilers to follow )

I'm pretty much on the same page... mixed feelings overall. I loved bits of each episode, and I was quite impressed by TPoT. And Eleven playing the Wii was pretty hilarious; somehow I can't see Nine or Ten doing that. (Maybe Tenii with Tony lol.)

IA, River was pretty cold to her parents, and her self-sacrificing attitude really rubbed me the wrong way. I guess it could be interpreted as leading up to her giving her life for him in SitL/FotD. But still... the Doctor actually does something tender and she gets mad at him for it. IDGI.

Good point about the Doctor visiting bb!Amelia. I've decided there's absolutely no point in trying to make sense of anything, lol.

Can't wait to be able to squee over OUAT! Unfortunately I probably won't be able to watch until tomorrow night. Boo.

Yeah, the Doctor healing River's hand is something else I have to harp on about. Since when can he just "summon" regeneration energy?

I've also decided that the whole Amelia thing is something to relegate to the great unknown though lonewytch has a good explanation.

I'm sooooo excited about OUaT!! I'm having to watch tonight as well because I have to buy it off of iTunes :( no streaming for me (and ain't got no TV)

He already used his regeneration energy to other things. I don't remember them exactly now, but I'm sure he already used it in at least two different ocasions.

But I don't think he's used that energy "on will" or when he wasn't just regenerated, you know? It was just a little random.

On the point of him going back to little Amelia...the Amelia he went and put back to bed occurred after the event collapse but before the Universe rebooted, so that never happened once he rebooted it. After Big Bang 2, the Amelia he went back to had never been put to bed by him. Does that make sense? :)

oh goood! i was super confused about that too. so basically everything that happened before never happened then?

I think everything happened the same apart from the bit where it was the Doctor unwinding in reverse before everything rebooted. The things he did as he was unwinding backwards would never have happened. So in the post reboot universe, he never put Amelia to bed, so she is still there in the morning. It kinda makes my head hurt thinking about it!

Yeah, just reading this makes my head hurt but I appreciate that you took the time to explain

I completely agree that the Doctor being so keen on killing people is throwing off his character. It took me a long time to watch the 11th Doctor (and no, not because he is not Tennant), but because I feel like he regressed to the the first/ ninth Doctor (angry after the war, ect). The episode where he wanted to sacrifice the alien dude to the Gunslinger had my scratching my head. Sometime, i feel like we have a bipolar child for the Doctor, and I'm just not sure where these emotions are coming from.

Yeah, the Doctor has had his dark moments but with the apparent evolution of his character since Nine, it really does throw me off

Honestly the Doctor has ALWAYS had a dark side and ALWAYS been willing to kill when necessary or when pushed too far. It's been there from the very first episode (and by that I mean the first ep back in 1963). He tries to control it at times (hence the companions and Donna's words "Sometimes you need someone to stop you"), but it's always there and it's always been there. Nothing new whatsoever.

I am aware of that but it gets thrown off with the fact that he had some moments as Nine and Ten and part of Eleven where he wasn't like that. On screen there just doesn't seem to be a valid explanation for it as he's way darker now than he was last season

Well, the darkness certainly isn't the whole of his personality, and I do think he wars against as it were. But Donna and Amy called it correctly, IMO; he needs his companions to "hold him back." He needs them to help not fall completely into that darkness. And in Series 7, he's traveling alone for large chunks of time. Amy commented on how long the gaps between when they see him were getting. And hence her words for him to find someone when she realized she and Rory weren't going to be with him anymore. She knows he needs someone.

I guess that could explain the more darkness that we are seeing now.

There's also another theory that we're seeing the episodes in reverse to how the Doctor experienced it, so his darkness is more having to do with the fact that he knew he lost the Ponds. While that is still not a full explanation of Oswin/Clara, it works for me

I think I only enjoyed it 'cause I wasn't expecting anything. :/ I mean, there were plot holes galore, but I've mostly chosen to ignore them so I won't give myself a headache or Moffat too much importance. Oh, that was a bit rude. Sorry. >.>

OUAT ftw!

That's totally my point of view in watching these recent episodes. I'm just willing to be entertained, nothing more.

Did you see the premiere yet?
