You've hit on a very sensitive subject...."Shootout" is what brought me into fandom, and regretfully, it's what eventually took me out.
Yes, yes, yes, to your couple of paragraphs about the wall, and Hutch's duel role. It was the first episode I saw, and it had me at hello. I didn't think about how the women were portrayed, but I do like how the many secondary characters were a perfect contrast to Starsky & Hutch's relationship. What they witness....oh my. And how they realize how empty their own lives are...
I think you know I wrote a lengthy script comparison regarding this episode. I've thought a lot about it throughout the years.
But one day, fans were mocking all that was apparently wrong with this episode in a list discussion. When I attempted to explain what was so right for me, I guess I came across wrong, because I did not get a good reception, and that's when I knew it was time to bow out of active fandom.
You make a good point about the contrast. I was always so busy being annoyed that we had to bother with the other people taking time away from S&H that I never stopped to think about the fact that it was showing us the difference. Wow! new insight!
My goodness. That's a little sad. I'm a first gen fan but relatively new to the fandom. I know what S&H means to me although everyone else has their own unique perspective. I would hope there's a place for all of us. No episode in itself, and indeed the series as a whole, is perfect. But this one comes damn close. Warm salutations.
I agree, too. And Shootout was the first episode I saw as well. I honestly have never heard fans not including it in the best of the h/c list. Actually I think there are several people in the fandom that were hooked by shootout

Such a lovely commentary on a very special episode. DS & PMG brought magic to the small screen. When one show can affect so many so deeply, no one can tell me otherwise.
This episode always blows me away! When I think of the definition of meekness, strength under control, I always think of Hutch in this episode. The Love that he has for Starsky is beyond definition. I always want to tell the people that say that Hutch is so mean to Starsky that they must of forgotten Shootout. Hutch is not mean to Starsky he treats Starsky like a man who is really close to another man, a best friend, who sometimes gets on your nerves, some one you can tease, someone that you can take your frustrations out on because you know he won't leave you, someone who you love to death. I love that you bring out the contrast to the other couples lives compared to S and H! Great thoughts, thanks for sharing.
I was in my college years when I became an S&H fan. I think this episode is a perfect example of what DS & PMG were trying to achieve. Namely portraying real men of the time, with real feelings, human and dealing with a harsh world with love as their backup.
After Vietnam, "Starskys and Hutches" were all over the campus, slightly older men trying to get their life to make some sense.DS & PMG are perfect in the clothes they wear, the length of their hair and the slightly anti-establishment chips on their shoulders. Any other show would have played down the emotional shock of Hutch and the real pain of Starsky.
Everytime I watch any episode, I feel like I'm watching the evolution of a generation.
And to shfan I hope a bad experience hasn't ruined the show for you. I'm glad you said something about it and maybe feel better about it now.A fandom should be about respect and support. I hope you find it again.
