“You should come inside, Father. You’re going to catch your death in this damp.”
Darius smiled, the phrase having amused him since he had heard it almost a century ago. “A bit of rain is not going to hurt me, Mrs. Landry”
“That’s what Adrienne’s late husband said too, God rest his soul.”
The man in question had been run over by a carriage after a night of drinking, but Darius thought it best not to mention that fact as it had indeed been raining at the time.
Instead he offered his arm, and showed her inside to her seat.

The irritability, fighting, and drinking were nothing more than symptoms of a bigger problem. Years spent as a soldier, using skills he had a natural talent for, had honed Wes into something he might never be able to escape. Now with no real use for those skills, he found that life was lacking in ways he couldn’t explain.
He shouldn’t want his old life back. He was happy with what he had now, but there was always that pull in the back of his mind.
Soon, if he didn’t do something, it might very well drive him over the edge.

“Throw myself on your endless mercy?”
“No.”
“Apologize to Loran?”
“Try again.”
“Leave the Wraiths and go back to the Rogues?”
“Not a bad thought, but no.”
“Then what is it?”
“Abject humiliation.”
“I thought the whole apology to Face thing would cover that one…”
“You wish it was going to be that easy. You remember that holorecording I told you I took of the Kettch thing?”
“Yeah…”
“I gave it to Hobbie.”
“That’s low, Wedge, even for you.”
“Yub, yub, Lieutenant.”
“I’m really starting to hate that phrase.”
