Drabble 36, prompt 36 - Ring island_juliet July 5 2010, 12:39:27 UTC
She knows that he’s bought a ring because Amy can’t keep a secret. The day it’s in on the sub, Amy comes to see Juliet with a grin. “Guess what just came in?”

Juliet shrugs a little, pushing her goggles up. “No clue.”

“An engagement ring.”

“Who’s getting engaged?”

Amy looks at Juliet like she’s been struck dumb. “The only couple on this island that isn’t already married?”

Juliet blinks a little at that before realizing. “You think…”

“It’s his name on the order form,” Amy confirms.

She has no idea why her heart starts pounding. He’s going to propose.

Off to school, is all. He's got a bit of hero-worship towards her.

Badru sat, half hanging off the bar stool, vision swimming in and out of focus.

A woman, waving her glass in the air, belted out a poor rendition of Black Velvet. Men cheered wildly, tongues hanging from mouths.

In the booth behind him, a couple whispered, heads tilted together. The girl radiant, looked adoringly at her lover.

"Gimme 'nother," Badru slurred. He tossed the Jack back, adding the glass to the already long line of them creeping down the bar.

He hated their liquored-up confidence. Their alcohol induced mating dance. But mostly, Badru hated he couldn't be more like them.

Patricia and Badru sat together on the porch swing, watching their daughter as she bounced across the yard. Sunlight grew long and the fireflies began to blink. Alice chased after them, squealing with childish delight when she caught one. She peeked into her cupped hands, watching the light flicker, then opened them. releasing the bug back into the air.

Badru nodded off, the evening air lulling him. But a loud girlish shriek startled him and he darted over to Alice.

"What's wrong," he asked, panicked.

She frowned and stuck her hand in his face. "Daddy, that firefly pooped on me!"

"I don't wanna go to Jesus camp anymore an' you can't make me," Alice said, with all the determination and defiance a seven year old can muster.

Badru picked her up, setting her on his knee. "Alice, you know your mama don't like you callin' it Jesus camp," he reminded her. "Now tell me what happened."

Alice pouted. "Ms. Angie smells bad, I don't never know the right answers, Jenny made fun of my dress, and I get in trouble for not being lady like."

Badru petted her head and tried to hide his laughter. Oh the drama of youth.

Trees had been saplings the first time Mammy came here. She'd had her youth then. A thick, curvy figure and bones that hadn't yet begun to ache.

She threw herself onto the stoop, begging for help. The door creaked open and Mammy stumbled inside. Voices called to her, whispered to her heart.

Mammy sobbed and whimpered. There had been a man. He'd made promises he couldn't keep, took things that were not his to take.

Bargains were made. Blood flowed, years taken, a life lost and one given. And Mammy never loved again.

Not creatures of her own kind anyway.
