Drabble 35, prompt 2 - Fireworksisland_julietJuly 4 2010, 12:29:37 UTC
Juliet’s not sure why they celebrate the fourth of July on the island. There are enough people from the states, but this definitely isn’t the U.S. or any of its territories. So it strikes her as a bit odd. She goes to the barbecue with James anyway, and it’s their first ‘official’ outing as a couple. It’s nice to hold his hand and kiss his cheek when she feels like it.
They lie together on a blanket during the fireworks, her head resting on his shoulder. They’re away from everyone else and he kisses her as the sky lights up.
The last of the concrete was drying, and K’tanya had some time to kill, so she called B over and sat down with the pup for a little girl talk.
"I know you’re still young, but it’s almost time for you to hit puberty. Your powers are bound to start showing up soon so you better start thinking about how you’re going to break it to Aidan when the time comes."
B made a soft wuffing noise as K’tanya scratched her ears.
"And do something about the doggy breath too. It’s going be bad enough when the sulfur kicks in."
#76 Author's Choice: What's in a name?amusingthemuseJuly 4 2010, 22:38:40 UTC
I know many people who are unhappy with their names. I can relate. I mean, try growing up with the name Said. That’s ‘Sah-eed’ not ‘sed’. My mom thought it was cute.
Juliet may give a speech about roses smelling sweet even if they weren’t called roses, but let me tell you: parents should seriously take into account that we have to live with these names throughout junior high. Then, there’s high school to worry about.
Do you know how many people have tried writing stories about me so they can write: “Said said"?
The sun was warm against his back as Darius knelt beside his herb garden. He took a moment to breathe in the scents of freshly trimmed grass and the rich earth of the garden itself before he got down to the task at hand.
Leaning forward, he braced himself on one arm as he reached out to pull a small plant from between the rows of mint and basil. He spent the next several minutes weeding the garden, the same as he did ever morning, humming softly to himself in the process.

Everyone else does.

It was the beginning of a good day.
