14 - Charity

He pays for Curtis Jr.'s college. When Curtis moves his family (and mother Josephine) into a new house, Ellis makes the down payment. The grandchildren go to school on Ellis's dime too. When Curtis wrecks the car and can't work for six months, Ellis quietly pays the medical bills.

They all adore him, and why not? Kind ol' uncle Ellis. Generous Ellis. Coaches the kids musically. Saint of a man.

Only Josephine doesn't fall for it. Only Josephine says thank you with her lips-- while her eyes reflect her knowledge of the bargain, the real cost of Sam Ellis's charity.

50 - Treasure

Once upon a time there was a peasant boy who slew an evil prince and took his magic sword.

The peasant boy had slaved for the prince and princess. When angry, the prince beat the boy, and drew his sharp sword to nick the peasant with the very tip.

The magic sword drank blood.

So did the boy.

With the evil prince dead and his castle burning, the boy took the sword, and fled into another land.

He sold it-- for safety, and his own castle.

He didn't live happily ever after, but magic swords never make that happen anyway.

Drabble 28, prompt 6 - Pride

"I’m fine, James." She’s walking away from him, not wanting him to see how not fine she is after running into a young Benjamin Linus.

James grabs her arm but doesn’t make her turn. Just stops her from going forward. "You ain’t gotta put on some act around me, Juliet. Okay? It’s me."

She looks at him, her usual passive mask replaced by something he doesn’t really know. "That boy is going to grow up to be a monster. He’s going to trap me here..." She feels like she can’t breathe.

Pulling her against him, James can only hold her.

36. Ring (71 of 100)

It's not a wedding ring, but Val gives it to Ellis on their anniversary.

Bone white ring, just the right size for Ellis's finger though he don't wear it there.

The ring is bone white because it is made of Val's bones.

All 206 of them , a small piece from each. Uncle Met's making.

The ring is made of Val's bones because Val wants Ellis to understand that he loves him with his whole being.

The bones are alive, a living symbol.

The ring will live long after the rest of the boy has died.

So will the love it represents.

Valentine stared at the YouTube video. Clicked play. This one set to music.

Happened every few months. Someone posted the footage of his collapse, and Val unwisely watched the video. Felt compelled to click every time, to watch himself fall. See himself - stretched skin over bones, convulsing. Watch the camera pan in.

Cameraman made a fortune leaking the footage to Entertainment Tonight.

Val doesn't blame anyone.

Just how it happened. Just nature.

Stars shot to the top. Burned out bright.

Staring down a zombie knight on skeletal horse was not the high point of Heck's week.

"So when they say chivalry is dead, they really mean undead?" Newt quipped. Heck shot him a glare. So not in the mood for the intern .

They watched the zombie knight wave his lance menacingly towards the laundromat that had been built over the Ren Fest fairground.

"We should do something before he spears a dryer," Newt said.

Heck turned to his intern and smiled. "I have a plan."

Newt shrunk back.

"Don't look so glum -- you're about to get a promotion, Sir Newt!"
