Glossary Of Terms

Bekki:
It's short for Rebekah, which is her aunt on her mom's side's name.  Rebekah means "snare" in Hebrew, and the only reason Bekki knows that is because she went through a phase of compulsively looking up the meanings of names when she was in junior high.  She spells it "Bekki" instead of "Becky" because she thinks it'd be weird to add in a "c" where there wasn't ever one to begin with.

Brian and Alice:
Bekki's parents.  They still live in Lakewood, and while they're supportive of her choices they both sort of wish she'd try to be a bit more practical.  They both work in state offices.

Broadway:
Bekki's dream and her passion.  Though she loves acting and is trying her very hardest to land roles, she is more likely to end up a writer for the stage and she loves to do so.  She wants to win a Tony for Best Book of A Musical some day.  She also has a crazy comprehensive glossary of random Broadway shows in her head and references it regularly.

Carley, Gemma and Thomas:
Bekki's oldest friends.  Carley is her best friend and roommate, and is a singer/actress; Thomas also lives in New York, and currently works in a bookstore; Gemma lives in Seattle and does graphic design but they write each other frequently.  They're the only three people from the "old days" (i.e. pre-college) who know most of her dirty little secrets.

Clinical depression and anxiety:
Bekki has it.  She's not likely to advertise this fact, though - most people see her as being generally cheerful and pleasant, which is to an extent true but also a defense mechanism.

Coffee:
What Bekki prepares for people in order to pay her rent.  She's damn good at it, too - but shhh, she herself often prefers hot chocolate or, for a caffeine buzz, diet Coke.

Costume parties:
Bekki's favorite diversion.  As she says, "It's not a party unless it's a costume party."  Bonus points if there's a theme, but she'll take any excuse she can to dress up all fancy.  Oftentimes she chooses costumes that stem from obscure movies or musicals, leading to nobody knowing what she's supposed to be, but she looks fabulous anyway.

Crafts:
Bekki does them.  She's got quite a reputation amongst her friends as being handy with a Bedazzler.

Indie music:
When she's not geeking out over showtunes, this is where Bekki's tastes often run to.  She tries really hard not to be a music snob but sometimes she can't help it.

Lakewood:
Bekki's hometown, a generally suburban-type community about an hour from Seattle.  Not exactly a small town but sleepy enough that Bekki couldn't wait to get out and as a rule doesn't exactly like returning to.

Lauren:
Bekki's beloved keyboard.  Being a sort-of songwriter and having been playing piano since she was eight, the thing it was hardest for her to leave at home when she went to college was her piano, so her parents bought her a beautiful, portable keyboard, which she christened Lauren because she names all of her stuff.  Often used for jam sessions or stress relief.

New York City:
The place Bekki calls home.  She's lived there since college and adores every moment, even the crap ones.

NYU:
Bekki's alma mater.

Quentin Tarantino:
AKA "a god among filmmakers," in Bekki's opinion.  One of her heroes and obsessions, and also one of her most prominent reference points.  It's a dream of hers to somehow work with him some day.

Starbucks:
Where Bekki works (for now).  She has a love-hate relationship with it.  It pays the bills and the schedule's not bad but sometimes it makes her more iconoclastic vive la vie Boheme-type side sad to be slinging coffee for corporate whores.

"The Geek Obsessions":
Bekki's shorthand for the various things she dorks out about.  This is including but not limited to: various musicals, B-movie horror films, certain comic book-type things (darker things, a la Alan Moore or Frank Miller), lots of various novels, eccentric chick singers, anything written/conceived by Joss Whedon, steampunk and/or neo-Victorian fashion, proper spelling and grammar, and graphic design.

Veronica and Adrian:
Bekki's favorite co-workers.  Veronica is twenty-five, a Brooklyn native, kind of big-sisterly, in med school; Adrian is a twenty-three-year-old poet of sorts that Bekki has a lingering, hopeless crush on.

Writing:
Bekki's big love, her big goal in life, what she wants and loves to do.  She's into writing novels and plays, not so much with the poetry; she did a journalism stint in college and wouldn't mind doing it for a whlie but prefers fiction.
