I agree with you about Mary Renault's The Persian Boy. It's one of my all-time faves! She really builds the ancient world very well. I liked the POV of Bagoas to comment on Alexander. Hephaestion wasn't in it as much, probably due to Bagoas being smitten with his King, but that relationship was still important.
I did like very much how Alexander's men indulged his fondness for the 'barbarian' (Bagoas) and even respected the Persian boy for not currying favor or using his favored position in unsavory ways. He was also a great dancer! :)
