It was so cliché, go to a party, well crash one really, sample the food that some prankster had augmented with catnip and end up pregnant. He didn’t even remember much about the other guy, other than he knew how to use his tongue really well and was very entertaining. Torry looked around the forest of trees near the campus and found a likely looking rock to perch on to consider his fate.
‘Here I am, preggers, in my second year at the academy, and a not so impressive tabby familiar. Who will want me and how am I going to make my way in the world and take care of kittens.’ He mentally scratched out ‘kittens’ and substituted ‘kitten’. ‘Please let it only be one,’ and reached down to lick his belly.
He hadn’t even considered he could be pregnant until the tuna at lunch turned his stomach. Part of him still hoped it was a fur ball and then groaned as his mind supplied, a cute little fur ball. They provided early pregnancy test kits at the academy clinic but then they had to inform people and before you knew it it was, Hector Smith was preggers, all over the school. His eyes widened in horror, would they take away his hardship scholarship? Tears blurred his eyes, he had worked so hard to earn that scholarship, first in his class at the familiar home able to change into his human form at will. They’d said he’d done it as a kitten before he’d even opened his eyes and that’s how they knew he was a familiar and not a foundling kitten deserted by his mother on the doorstep of a vet’s office. But to be able to change to human as he wanted at such an early age had made them think that great things could be expected of him. Except that seemed to be it, all he could do magic wise though he could recite all the incantations perfectly from memory and he was told he ranked high on his tests. Frowning, he should rank high, he’d spent hours studying and reading outside the required materials to understand what was being taught better. They called it studying in depth and praised him for his initiative. Fat lot of good it was going to do him with a kitten to take care of and he gave another lick of apology to his belly.
“Well, you aren’t going to go away just because you’re inconvenient and there’s special vitamins that I’ll need to make sure that you are healthy, so,” he sighed, “we should get ourselves to the clinic and have that test done to document that you are there and get that health care. They should keep me at least to the end of term since you won’t be showing yet. Right.” He stood and stretched, “I’ve time to get to the clinic and then study for the exam on Thursday.”
“Congratulations,” said the clinician, “you’re pregnant.” She smiled sympathetically at him, “Not quite what you wanted to hear, is it? The doctor will want to examine you and maybe do an ultrasound to see how far along you are and how many kittens you’re carrying so we know what to expect. You’ll have to be in your familiar form for that of course, since it’s so early in your pregnancy. Are you able to change for me?” Suddenly Torry was a feline sitting on the chair next to her desk. “Oh.” She said in surprise and smiled at him, “Yes, I guess you can. If you’ll come this way please, we’ll get you right into see the doctor now. We’re having a light day today.”
Torry padded cautiously into the exam room, his fur only slight fluffed out, his every nerve on alert.
From behind him he heard a man say, “Hello, I’m Dr. Mraz. You seem like you might be able to jump up onto the table by yourself but for safety purposes we prefer to lift you up.” Strong hands grasped him firmly under his front legs and behind his back bringing him up onto the smooth paper sheet on the exam table. Kind fatherly brown eyes looked him over. “Your fur is in excellent condition, well groomed and healthy. Whoever is inside you is lucky to have such good care being taken of them even before they’re born.” Dr, Mraz had a thing in his hand that looked a bit like a very thick pen. “Now if you could lay down on your back my assistant, Julie, will spritz you down with warm water on your tummy and put a thin plastic sheet over that area. Then she’ll squirt some cold slimy stuff on the sheet and we’ll have a peek inside. This won’t take long and if you want to watch on the monitor, just crane your neck to the left.”
Everything happened like the doctor said and Torry only startled a bit when the water first dampened his fur on his tummy. He tried to remain still but it was totally beyond him from purring when he saw the small blinking spot in the middle of the confusing mess of what his insides looked like. The probe moved to see from different angles but there was still only one little tiny pulsing thing visible.
“I’d say there’s only one small person in there. Got a nice strong heartbeat going too. Seems consistent in size for the date of conception you gave us. You should easily make it through to the middle of the next semester and have this little one for the holiday break with enough time to settle into a schedule that will allow you to continue classes when the break is over.” With a smile and a wiggle of Torry’s back paw, “Go get your clothes back on and Julie and you will confer on the date and time for your next pre-natal appointment. I’ll get your first week’s worth of pre-natal vitamins ready and the prescription emailed over to the student pharmacy so you obtain more without having to come in all the time and then we can talk about anything you need answered.”
Torry changed to human and started weeping, one hand to his face and the other cupping over where he thought that little heart blinked. “Shhh. It’s alright. Everything’s going to be alright. You’ll see and probability is that whoever the father is, considering where you were, they’re someone strongly magical which bodes well for your kitten’s possible abilities. The kitten will have the best environment to grow up in for their early years. The academy believes in caring for their students. There’s a crèche on campus to watch and care for your child while you’re in your classes and help providing for whatever your baby needs. Now you go get your clothing on and make your next appointment and Julie will bring you back to my office when you’re ready.”
