The voice could have come from anyone in the milling students,“Hey! What do you call a blond witch in an institution of higher learning?”
“Don’t. Don’t give it credence.” Andy had his hand latched tightly onto Simon’s forearm.
“You aren’t a witch and you are,if not smarter than that idiot.”
“Idiot call Daddy bad person?” Newt had raised his small head above the edge of his pouch carrier stretching up to see around.
“No, that is not what the person said,” Andy answered. “He’s just behaving badly.”
“Oh... ‘K”
“You’re really into this positive parenting thing.” “There are bad people in the world though.”
“He’ll learn that soon enough… eventually.”
“Who, the idiot or Newt?”
Sighing, “Both,” Andy replied. “Let’s get Newt to his daycare so we won’t be late for my Familiar Parenting class.”
Really think I need to take a class on being a familiar?”
“How good of an example were your parents?”
“Since I don’t remember them hardly at all, as you know... but I do know what it is like to grow up as a magically gifted were-snake.”
“Well our son is going to have two loving parents to help him grow up.”
“Okay.”
“’K,” came from the pouch, “Love Daddies.”
Hey, Visitor!” the speaker was closer and easier to spot among the students in the small group of his snickering peers. There was a soft curse from that group as Simon changed into his 6 foot tall serpent form just before they scattered with a bevy of collective calls of ‘Sorry’.
“Hello,” a nicely clad man approached them. “It isn’t often that one meets a were-snake and his partner. I’m Evan Brandson, a professor in Comparative Magical Beings. I’d love to have you talk to my class.”
“Daddy Sye, speak class?” Newt had stuck his head out of his pouch again.
“Not your class, baby, a different class with big students who don’t know about people like you and Daddy.”
Andy noticed Professor Brandson was looking at Newt enrapt, “Newt, what have I told you about not mesmerizing people.”
“Not nice. Sorry,” Newt retreated slightly into his pouch.
“No, it’s fine. I just wasn’t expecting such a strong ability in someone so young,” Brandson hurried to say. “You’re quite something,” he spoke directly to Newt.
“Well, it’ll be a while before he’ll be ready for the older classes. Now if you’ll excuse us, we’re going to be late.”
“Of course,” he pulled out his wallet and extracted a card, “please call me if you’re willing to talk to my class. I do think it would be helpful for greater exposure for when your son is older.”
“You going to do it?” Andy asked as they walked off, Simon was once more bipedal.
“I’ll think about it. It might be as he says. Let’s see if your class helps me to make my decision.”
“It may take more than one time.”
“More time with you then and I like walking you and Newt to your classes. Maybe I can learn something too.”
With a small secret smile Andy shifted his hand to hold Simon’s, it was the right answer.
