“Why are we babysitting these little monsters again, Simon,” Andy asked sotto voce out of the side of his mouth.
“Because their parents kindly did not prosecute us for damaging their young psyches and they turned out to be good people,” was responded.
“Sir, that’s not nice to say about us,” Hector, the kitten from the nature walk that had interrupted Andy and Simon’s fun times al fresco in the shrubbery, stood looking up at them.
Grinning down at the cute kitten, because yes he was, “all small kittens with too much energy are little monsters; monsters that steal the energy from the adults around them. That’s why parents and kittensitters are so tired by the end of the day if they survive that long.”
“Oh,” and the kitten gave a cheeky grin, “okay,” and ran off.
“You do realize that he’s going to tell his parents on us.”
“Simon, you’re not afraid of a tattletaleling kitten, or two … or three? How many are there again?” Andy looked at the small furry frenzy happening around them.
“Probably less than appear to be here.” The sound of a noisy scuffling brought the need for investigation. “Oh scales, what?!”
One small defender stood, his back arched in front of a low table on which stood a lamp, fending off all attackers. Past the inadequate defense, another kitten streaked through, touching the lamp with a paw, turning it off, and then assuming a position next to the first kitten defender.
“What are they doing?”
“Looks like Lamp Tag,” Simon hazarded. “I’m betting that the lamp has been magic glued to the table… I hope.”
“Do we know where the replacement light bulbs are?”
“Let’s just hope that the bulb lasts until bedtime.”
“Snake familiar kids don’t do this, do they?”
“Trying to tell me something love? Like those bacon jalapeno poppers were more than just because they taste so good?”
“Well they do.”
“Uh huh.”
“You wish.”
Simon, “Oh, never dare a snake familiar, love.” rubbed Andy’s tummy.
