Okay, debating how to proceed on Changeling--I've been reading the beginning of the MS so far to the writing group, and there are some fairly large revisions to the first few chapters, I think, based on last night's discussion. So do I press on with writing new stuff, trying to finish the story? Or go back and re-write, since it might very well ( Read more... )

I think you should write some new stuff before you go back and revise. Keep the basic ideas of what you might be revising in your head if you think they will affect later stuff. I think you'll be happier overall if you can get a little new stuff down.

I am back! I work hard on Mondays and lately have been able to get away by 7:15 or 7:30, so I get to N Richland by 8--not normal writing group time, but definitely after party fun times!

My concern with revising now is that I think the tone is changing--right now I think it's kind of inconsistent, and I want to make sure the voice is settled, because that will affect the way I write the rest....I think I may do the revising that involves inserting a completely new scene, and see how it turns out....

I have been told by a number of experienced writers to make note on the changes that need to be made on the stuff that you've already written, both so you know what happened for future text and so that you won't forget, and then move on with the new. Once you are finished, then go back and renew.

Authors, especially new authors, tend to get bogged down trying to get the beginning right. Better to have a complete draft, then revise.
