If you want any advice or have any questions or anything about finding an agent/getting published, let me know. I know my way around publishing pretty well. :)
Thank you! My main problem is having no idea where to get started - I don't know how the process works, or how to contact someone that would be interested in a first time novelist.
I have some non-fiction credits (music journalism, mostly, though some fairly big name interviews) and some published short stories and poems. My best publication credit for a short is probably the one that wound up in the Santa Clara Review.
So I don't even know if I'm accomplished enough that an agent would give me the time of day.
I have a completed short story collection and novel (though I want to do another edit of them both to try and get them in top shape) that I'd like to do something with.
Start with the novel--it's almost impossible to get representation with a short story collection. Once you do get an agent, then you can have them look at your short stories. (Also, most agents and editors don't care so much about your credits--I never really bothered looking at them; if your story is good that's all that matters.)
You'll need a query and a synopsis. A finished draft is helpful, but you might be able to get away with sending out your query with only the first fifty pages/three chapters polished. (Response times can be glacial.)
What genre do you write? A lot will depend on that.
An LJ friend of mine recently had her book published, and talks about it in her LJ. You might want to give it a read. It could be helpful, plus, she's also pretty funny.

I am completely swamped with stuff for the next week (at least), but I should be able to put together a draft.

And it's okay, I understand you're super-busy. It's just nice that you're putting something together for me. =)
