The Fourth Annual Service of the Church of Latter Day Geeks

May 31, 2014 16:07

For the past four years I have organised a "Science Fiction and Fantasy-Friendly Service" that invites geeks to come and worship God while dressed up in some sort of costume. I guess it's cosplay church. But not complete cosplay - I am a real minister, it is real worship, and it does happen in a real church. There's always a theme; this year it was ( Read more... )

things of joy, sci fi service, church weirdness, church of latter day geeks, fannish obsessions, ministry

Fewer people than last year, which I think was because I was too lazy/busy to advertise properly this year, but we still had over a hundred, so we still would have packed out my little Romsey Church.

Which is awesome - especially since it's not a novelty anymore.

That was wonderful! I rather needed it with what's been going on in my Real Life.

I laughed out loud at the vid especially -"wait, hold on. . . that's the Lion King, but the point still stands."

Yes, starrylizard is brilliant. I'm so lucky that I can give her themes and have her just run with them.

I'm glad if this was helpful for you. I've had one 10-year-old tell me it was "awesome"; one of my ex-students tell me that she found it very helpful as she contemplates going back to school to become a doctor; and now you. So I think it was worthwhile.

I always like your message CK and I'm not really the religious sort (comes from my upbringing). I dunno if I've ever said it, but I love having you as a friend (& a few others who have put up with me no doubt insulting them at times). Brings a lot of perspective to the messages I was raised with. Softened me around the edges a bit. That's hard to do too! So Thanks for being you! :D

Did you have a vid this year? I saw you talking about the service on FB and hoped I hadn't forgotten a request for input. If I did, apologies. Always open to attempt more while my editing program holds up and I have a vague recollection of how to use it. *smish*

No, not this year, because I sneakily got another minister to do the sermon/reflection and he interspersed scenes from Firefly and Serenity into his talk. You are still MY vidder, though, yes? When I do another service when I'm preaching you'll make me a vid?

How very wonderfully sneaky! Glad I didn't miss anything. If I'm around a computer, I'm always happy to help. Your sermons have presented some interesting challenges. ;-)
