The nature of rumors

Aug 25, 2010 13:45

Late last week, I posted something on my live journal, criticizing a practice that I heard about at Pennsic. Since it was hearsay, it was a rumor, whether or not it was true. It turns out it wasn’t true, and I edited my post accordingly. I suspect that one thing was said and another was heard, not anybody’s fault, but a bit of a game of telephone. ( Read more... )

Hey -- you admitted you'd heard wrong, and struck out what you had written so as to not try and hide that you'd said it all. And gave us a strong visual cue that the story was false. (I'll admit, I've forgotten the story already... something about singing and getting paid to teach or something.)

In my book, that makes you the anti-suck.

Thank you for saying that - but I want to be clear I'm not fishing!

I forgot to mention - I did consider just deleting the entire post - it was somewhat ill-conceived and I was cranky anyway. But then people might have read one version and not the other.

By leaving it up, the history remains. I think that is a Good Thing in most cases.

Meh -- why do people always jump to the worst sort of conclusions? It annoys me sometimes.

I think that people said that about me... ;-)

Sometimes rumors are because people only get part of a conversation. Sometimes they are because someone perceives an action out of context.
And then there are times that people start rumors to be malicious, or further themselves because thats the only way they know how.

the first two are forgivable, mistakes, that everyone makes sometimes in their lives.

the last is unforgivable, and shows the true nature of a persons soul.

I doubt very much that you are the latter :) And I always welcomed people coming to me with the rumors so that I can laugh, and set them straight. Sometimes, I like the entertainment value. :)

I think that often it's somewhere in between. Almost everybody has a bit of pettiness in them. I know that I do, and I do try to fight it. But it's there, and not always clear what is a bit of pettiness and what is just conversation.

Hi, I'm following you from New Zealand. I figure you post interesting things ^_^; (More commonly from the AA forums and the SCA in general.)

Hi! I'm curious - what's your AA name?

(People reading this out of context would think we're all a bunch of recovering alcoholics...)
