Beatles Engineer Norman Smith Passes Away

You may also know him as Hurricane Smith, who had the hit "Oh Babe, What Would You Say," in the early 70's. He also worked with Pink Floyd

He worked with the Beatles first and was involved with some of the more interesting technical aspects of their recordings, iirc. So sad.

he was there from the beginning, more or less, right up to Rubber Soul.

Yep. I seem to remember that he was the one who came up with double tracking aka flanging (that's what John called it) and a few other technical innovations although I could be very wrong. I'm really bummed that I missed him at Fest for Beatle Geeks last year.

He was trying to get a book published toward the end, not sure if it was released in more than a limited edition. If I recall right they nicknamed him Normal :)
