I can't decide if I'm happy or sad to have missed all the G20 madness (and I thought the SuperBowl riots were bad... oh Oakland, when will you grow up?).
I'm glad I stayed home. It all seemed very interesting, but I hate cops. A lot of the protestors were from out of town, too, but I'm sure some PA people were there as well. One of my former classmates put up a Facebook status saying he was pissed at the out-of-towners who trashed Oaklad, hoped cops beat the shit out of them, then went on to say how he approved of the trashing of Oakland after the Superbowl because it was okay for residents to trash their own town. I immediately defriended him and will avoid him at all costs from now on. It is amazing how stupid people can be no matter what side they are on.
It definitely seems like a tough call- the whole rubber-bullets-tear-gas thing seems excessive, but then again, they didn't have permits to assemble and were told to go away loads of times. Also I don't see how vandalizing independently-owned businesses is exactly railing against corporatism.
I do think it was excessive. Especially when a cop kept pushing a young woman who was trying to leave as she was told, and when she was so frustrated she threw her bike at him he proceeded to punch her in the face and two other cops pushed her onto the pavement and dragged her across the street. I honestly think the cops in Oakland on Friday night were all dressed up with nowhere to go so they antagonized the crowd.
