As the various civil rights movements have made progress, society has slowly begun changing. Minority groups are being accepted as equals, and the youngest generation is losing the prejudices of their parents and grandparents. The gaps in employment and education are slowly closing. Things look hopeful.

Racism is still a problem. It's not as much of a problem as it used to be, but it still is.

This morning when I took my shower, in my typically absent-minded fashion I left a puddle on the bathroom linoleum and didn't wipe it up. Later on, I went to use the toilet and my cat Tiny followed me in (my cats, you see, have not yet learned what human privacy-seeking behavior is about).

A strategy that some people want to take when they try to increase acceptance is to emphasize the similarities between a minority individual and the "norm"; to try to explain to people that, "He's a lot like you.
