Zero to Meltdown in .5 Seconds: A Public Service Announcement

Today I was walking home from class when something really, really annoying happened to me.

I had been in pretty high spirits. The class had contained some interesting material that forced me to think in new ways. Consequently, I had a lot of energy to work off, and had been flapping my hands and walking so fast I was at times actually running. I was ( Read more... )

Gaaahhh! I hate when people do that.

Yes, I've had several drivers do the scare-honk while I was trying to walk from class to class.

Also, if the person in question is on roller blades you may well be crossing the line from 'annoying' to 'attempted murder' because the sudden noise is like to make them fall over and die. This only happened to me once but came veeeery close to knocking me over...

You seem to be starting from the belief that people would rather not have the effect on others that you describe. Perhaps that's true of your readers, but I have a somewhat dimmer view of humanity at large. So much so that I wouldn't write such a thing lest I put ideas in the heads of those who haven't yet figured it out.

GRE prep class, which at this point involved reviewing geometry. I think the GRE is a total farce, but I do love me some visual-thinking problems. :) Plus, I haven't done some of the more esoteric stuff since the tenth grade (and even then my curriculum was pretty bad).

It's utterly impractical stuff, and I'll never need to know it except for the GRE, but it was great to have some relief from the rest of the math, which seems to have mutated into little more than constantly needing to recall the multiplication table.

yeah, honking a horn for anything other than a warning is just plain stupid - in addition to the problems you've mentioned, it distracts drivers who may think that there is a threat of an accident (which can *cause* an accident), and causes people to take them less seriously so they risk being ignored in a true crisis.
