Cognitive dissonance SUCKS.

When you are a very logical person, faith in anything is hard for you. And naturally, Aspies like me are very logical people, for the most part--this has even sparked the theory that AS stems from being extremely left-brain dependent. It's also called the "extreme male brain" theory--I don't like that name, though, because it cuts out the female ( Read more... )

Scientific proof isn't much better. Science has its axioms, including free will, which is a leap of faith in itself. Think about it! The scientific method is based on the assumption that we can choose when and where to set up our experiments, and what the independent and dependent variables will be. And we probably can. But it might be that we're allowed to set up our experiments only when the relationship between the variables is what we're intended to observe, and that we're compelled to choose our variables accordingly. Another axiom of the scientific method is that pretty much the same thing will happen whether we're watching or not. Again, probably. But quantum theory, a product of science itself, has begun to cast doubt on that ( ... )

I appreciate your blog. As a psychologist, it is important for me to understand the inner world of persons in the autism spectrum. You are a great writer. And you are honest. That is what is so refreshing. So keep up the good work.

I really appreciate the way you frame this testimony, so often people discuss their faith in ways which effectively end discussion.

What I find ironic is your conclusion is the opposite of mine but with so very similar reasoning. I love that word (probably), the idea that things don't have to be definite, that "definite" is itself a myth. It's empowering and kind of awe inspiring. What you call "faith" I call "betting". I don't think there's a belief sans supported empirical evidence that the sun won't explode tomorrow, I think we bet that because the sun has never exploded before, and because we understand a bit about how stars work, that the sun will not explode tomorrow, then let the chips fall where they may.

Anyway, you are very succinct and your scientific-leftist brain is to be treasured in world of right-brained-emotional arguments.

Kudos.
