Ready to Learn

I am 25 and just learning to drive. When I was 16, I took driver's ed twice and failed it twice. Some of the professionals who are supposed to be helping me seemed to think that this meant I might never learn to drive, because I had had a try at it, and didn't learn. But a few months ago, I took an assessment and was judged to be capable of ( Read more... )

Meanwhile, last year, at age 24, I was still judged to be not a safe driver when I took an assessment. :-\ I think the biggest issues are probably my visual processing quirks; I understand the rules perfectly, I just can't make sense quickly enough of what I'm looking at to judge what I should do.

...Maybe in another 10 years?

Absolutely! I agree with you 100%. Have fun learning to drive. :)

I'm in the same place (learning to drive finally at 25). I really believe that as well. I see improvement in some developmental areas in myself most every year. I also know where I'm far behind where I'm 'supposed to be', driving being one but my emotional issues being more so. I handle stress..well much like a 13 year old at best and a 3 year old at worst.

I still can't properly tie shoes. I just wear Velcro or slip-on shoes almost always. Otherwise I end up with terrible knots (and I'm also pretty bad at getting knots out...well without scissors).

I'm convinced that the "milestones" mindset limits thinking about continued development. I was in high school before I could serve a volleyball over the net. No matter how hard I tried before that, or how much coaching I got, I couldn't do it. Then, one day it just clicked. I think development continues in both physical and mental areas.

Hey, I was 25 when I learned to drive too! It was the first time I needed to drive, but also, I really don't think I would have been ready at 15 or 16. Still don't really enjoy driving, but I'm a decent driver.

And I still very, very rarely wear laced shoes--I always blame being left-handed, but I just never quite got the hang of laces. I can do it, sorta, but I'd rather not. Same with kicking, catching, etc.--but I think my minimal depth perception and ZERO encouragement to learn sports skills in childhood are the problems there.
