If I had a dollar for every time I cut one of my fingers while preparing food...
But it hasn't happened in the past year or so. A few sharp lessons finally got me to cut safely: You get all your fingers inline, and put the knife right against them. If you touch the side of your knife with all your fingers, you can't cut them with it. Eventually you can keep them a bit back and not actually touch the blade - as long as you pay attention to where your fingers are before you start cutting...
that was probably the problem - I didn't pay attention to where my fingers are before I started cutting the bread. And maybe I should have used a slightly bigger knife. Then I could have followed your lesson better. I'll do that next time. Thanks for the hint.
