How to set up notifications?

Ok, here's my newbie question. Somehow, when I first set up this LJ account, and started adding people, I found a setting to be notified by email when a particular "friend" posts something on their own journal. I want to set it up on other "friends", but can no longer figure out where the setting is. This is not the same as the setting to receive

On the friend's profile/userinfo page, click on the little thumbtack icon. That'll send you a notification every time that person posts. (I think.)

I just follow things on my friends page, which collects all the recent posts in one place. (Although I guess that's really a lot more useful once your flist is big enough that there's new content on that page every day...)
