086 How to Layer Belts | Buckle Up Two by Two

May 25, 2008 22:59

At the risk of being called a Christmas tree and a sadist, I declare I have a certain penchant for wearing two belts in an outfit.
I. One OVER the Other

12 March 2008- I have thrown on a grey dress and slipped on some purple tights. I have picked the shoes and even the matching ring. Now I need a belt.. instinctively I reach for my favourite: a strip of leather, 1.5 inches wide, in a lovely shade of dark red. Then I pause... I want to try something different; my clothes and shoes are yearning for a fresh burst of colour. Inspiration strikes me and I whip up two belts instead: my favourite, and another in bright youthful red. The latter is too thin to be worn on its own, so I shall wear it over a thicker belt to make up for the width.

I turned the under belt to one side so as to hide its buckle and make the overall look more appealing (from the front, that is :X ). It was a cold day and I had on a jacket anyway, so it didn't really matter if I had shifted the belt buckle to my side or to my back. If I wasn't wearing a jacket though, I would move the belt only to my right, where the buckle can hide under my arm and more successfully, under my bag. It's best if the under belt has a buckle the same colour as its strap, so it can be disguised more effectively.

when it comes to coloured tights, i hate it when my skin shows through underneath.
the purple stockings were not opaque enough, so i wore a similar colour beneath.

The black and white sleekness of the computer keyboard ring, paired with the retro design of the shoes,
seems like a match made in heaven, well at least to me :)

I was playing around with my coloured tights one day and decided to mix and match them with different shoes for some experimental fun. To my surprise, the purple tights went very well with this pair of vintage white pumps. I was surprised not just because white turned out to match purple exceedingly well (before this I would always choose black as the default coordinating colour), but also because I hadn't expected such old "my fair lady" styles to sit down well with bold, modern coloured tights.

II. ...and DISGUISED;

9 April 2008- I am wearing two black belts, one on top of the other, disguised as one. The thicker belt is an obi belt, the thinner one the Hermes. I'm sure you are no stranger to how obi belts taper down into thin straps at the ends. Since my thinner Hermes belt happens to have straps of the same width as the ends of the obi belt, the two belts blend in together to create an illusion of one single belt.

For the best effect, I wrapped my obi belt around my waist in such a way that the thinner straps lay at an almost equal distance apart along the width of the belt, with an empty space between them for my second belt.

The colour combination of purple, black and gold is also fast becoming a favourite on my list.
It's royal with a touch of Goth at the same time.

This ring was originally a translucent pink. I got Jill and hot date's friend to colour it opaque black for me with his permanent acrylic marker. Initially I attempted to colour the ring myself with a normal permanent marker, but the ring turned out purplish black rather than pure black (the black ink had blue undertones.. so much for the black label). At any rate, thanks Han Ming!
III. One ABOVE the Other

17 March 2008- Inspired by the double waisted belt from Fendi's fall 2006 rtw collection, this style of wearing two belts was born out of necessity. My racerback dress clung to my body like dewdrops to leaves. As I didn't have a thick enough belt to cover up the hemline of the top I had worn inside for layering, I had to resort to using two belts. No one sensible of course buys two belts of the same design AND colour (I think), so I overlooked the different buckles and settled for belts of similar colour and width.

Ideally the buckles of each belt should be positioned directly one above the other. However because of how belt buckles usually jut out over the widths of their straps, the bottom belt tends to shift to one side after a while.

I bought this dress from American Apparel with the intention of wearing it like an easy throwover again and again. Alas, I feel too self-conscious in this tight fitting mini. The supposed basic now lives out most of its years, months, days in the cupboard, where it has just spent its second anniversary.
My right hand looks like a flower here.

"Cats don't eat apples," said hot date.
Never mind... this cat will, it has nothing else to eat.

The zipper heads dance up and down against the shoes as I walk, with a merry tinkling sound
like an invisible pomeranian following me wherever I go.
