Wakened one night by a curious dream
and a voice that seemed to be speaking to me
like a far-off subterranean dream
I rose and asked: What do you want of me?

It can be interpreted that he was dreaming within the dream and rose from it. OR That he rose within the dream.
Plus "rose" need not symbolize wakening up.
