Track 3
The sun stood bright and high as they raced together down the highway, Kurt watching everything they rushed by, and Blaine. Watching how Blaine smiled and sang, keeping his eyes on the road. And for a moment, Kurt just watched his boyfriend. In awe, he watched how he held the steering wheel with one hand, taking his sunglasses off with the other. And Kurt's lips turned into a smile when Blaine looked at him and sang, his dark eyes filled with emotions, filled with happiness. Often when Kurt looked at Blaine, he got this feeling of how the rest of his life would be. A feeling of complete and utter love no matter how many years would pass. A feeling of being old and gray and watching Blaine iron his bow ties, a feeling of wanting nothing but this in his life for as long as Kurt would live. Kurt realized that he was young and naive, but he was also in love with this amazing boy who drove him 500-something miles just to make him happy.
Driving into Mansfield, Blaine pulled over by a park, hopping out of the car and practically dancing around it to open Kurt's door for him. "Let's get some coffee," Blaine said. Grinned. Taking Kurt's hand and walking into the park without really knowing where to go. But they found coffee. They found biscotti and a place on the grass and Kurt kissed Blaine's lips softly as the wind gently stroked their cheeks. The clouds were fluffy above their heads and Blaine's hair was almost gel free, to Kurt's delight as he brushed his hand through it and kissed him one more time. People around them were talking, laughing, enjoying the summer heat, the birds flying all around them, bees buzzing, Blaine smiling. "I will miss you every single second," Kurt whispered, but Blaine shook his head and his smile disappeared. "Not yet. Let's not think about all of that. Not yet." And Kurt realized that he wasn't the only one who would be sad when they had to part ways. And so he nodded. Sipped his coffee and nodded. "Not yet."
But the feeling stayed a while longer and as the clouds rushed by and morphed from whales to pumpkins to unicorns above their heads, Kurt rested his head against Blaine's shoulder. They held their coffees in one hand, and each other's hand in the other. Watching the world move all around them, but feeling a little stuck. A little closer to loneliness. If just for a while.
An hour or so later, they walked back to the car and Blaine's eyes looked at the steering wheel for a while, just sitting there in the silence. Letting the heat almost become too much. "What if-," he started, but shaking his head to himself. Kurt looked at him. "What if what?" And there it was, suddenly, the crack in Blaine's voice, the tears in his dark eyes, the sadness in his words. "What if I can't stand being apart from you? What if I can transfer to a school in New York? What if we stay apart and grow apart and you'll meet someone-"
But Kurt cut him off and wrapped his arms around Blaine, letting him sort of break a little. Just for a while. "I love you." And Kurt wanted those words to be enough to reassure Blaine that everything would be okay, that everything would be just fine and that they would be together forever, but they were just words. He knew that. But he also knew that he believed in those words like they were the only thing that mattered. So he leaned back and looked his boyfriend in his tear filled dark eyes and Kurt smiled. "We're going to be alright. I promise. You are my one, I just know it. And I can't explain it, but I know that I will never meet anyone that will make me feel the way you do. I've known that since the moment I met you." And he brushed Blaine's tears away, and he kissed his salty lips and let his breath linger there for a while, until Blaine whispered a tearful "I love you, Kurt," and Kurt smiled softly.
"Let's listen to the last song again," Kurt said and Blaine laughed, brushing away tears and sadness and letting his eyes re-fill with happiness and stars as they pulled out on the street again and continued their trip. And though everything was eery and sad, both of them looked at each other and smiled. Because somewhere inside, both of them knew that everything would be okay. It could be the biggest challenge of their lives, but it could also be easy and simple and honest, and Kurt decided, right at that moment, that it would be. It would be easy living in a city 532 miles away from his boyfriend, just for a year. It would be easy waking up alone and going to bed alone, he'd done that his whole life, he could do it one more year. It would be easy to meet new people, a lot of them just like him, with the exact same ideas and interests, and it would be easy to make friends. And it would be really easy to tell them all about his boyfriend Blaine. The boy who constantly takes his breath away and makes his knees go weak and makes him laugh like no other.
A while later, they drove into Akron and Blaine wanted a cherry limeade and Kurt could really go for an unsweetened iced tea. They got burgers and sat in the shades on the ground with their backs against a concrete wall, and they ate and watched people drive by fast and slow, talking about how Rachel and Finn probably wouldn't last very long, Kurt shaking his head as Blaine went on and on about the apartment the couple had found and already moved into. "It had cockroaches, Kurt. Cockroaches!" And Kurt just laughed, sipping his drink, brushing dirt off his knees. He was just happy that he would know someone in New York, even if it meant getting invited to Rachel and Finn's sugar coated family dinners.
"Come on, honey," Kurt said, getting up on his feet and pulling Blaine with him. "Let's get back to the wonder that is air condition." And Blaine just laughed, watching Kurt climb into the drivers seat, taking the wheel, if just for a while. "Rest your eyes for a while." And Blaine nodded, closing his eyes, his dark eyelashes brushing against the skin underneath his eyes, his tiny self curling up on the seat next to Kurt. And as Kurt drove back onto the road, Blaine dozed off. If just for a while.
