I believe it's called hammocking. NBC already has two surefire hits running on Thurs @ 8 and 9 -- they hang a new show in between them to coast on their bookend success. It has worked for them for decades. As I recall, a similar strategy was part of how they managed to get Friends to hang on till the end of its first season...
Kath and Kim is horrible. They could show 30 minutes of dental work or skull fracture surgery in that time slot and still pull a rating.
Odd thing about Enemy - it isn't great but it's better than it was at the start and man did they promote the hell out of it. That's a lot of good cash down the drain.

Infallible - unless, apparently, the ends of the hammock were MOWE and K&K in which case nothing in between them would survive - the black hole of television!
