Cliche Bingo Card: Five things
The first time Lee almost told Crystal he loved her was after the finale. As they stood there, arms around each other, waiting not so patiently for Ryan to announce the winner, he looked to his side and he almost said it. He wanted to say it. He’d wanted to say it for weeks now. “I love you, Crystal.” It shouldn’t have been this hard. Crystal turned her head to Lee and smiled. Lee opened his mouth, he could do this! And then Ryan was announcing the winner and the confetti was raining down and the moment was gone.
The second time Lee almost told Crystal he loved her was during the first night of tour. It had been a long few months of rehearsals, but the tour was finally here and he was so relieved. As they took the stage to perform “Falling Slowly” for the sold out crowd he knew the excitement he was feeling came not from the crowded arena but from his proximity to Crystal. As they sang, as he looked into her eyes, he knew he had to tell her. But as they finished and exited the stage she was pulled one way and he was pulled another and the moment was gone.
The third time Lee almost told Crystal he loved her was as they said goodbye when tour was over. They stood together in the lobby of the hotel, talking in hushed voices about the past and the future and how they absolutely must stay in touch. Crystal turned as her named was called and waved a goodbye to Siobhan and Lee watched as her eyes crinkled when she smiled and sparkled when she laughed and he wanted to tell her. He started to tell her. “Crystal” he said softly, returning her attention to him. She looked at him, smiling again, but a different smile, and he wanted to tell her. The elevators dinged and Tony ran out, throwing himself into his mother’s arms, and the moment was gone.
The fourth time Lee almost told Crystal he loved her was New Years Eve. They were standing together in a corner, champagne in hand, discussing the whirlwind their lives had become. A silence settled over them as Crystal sipped her drink. The room began chanting the countdown 5!.....4!......3!.......2!.......1! and cheered as the New Year was upon them. Lee leaned down and gently brushed his lips against Crystal’s momentarily. He pulled back and smiled. The room cheered as Lee mumbled a “Happy New Year” and the moment was gone.
The fifth time Lee almost told Crystal he loved her was at four in the morning when she called him, upset because her boyfriend had left her and her son was with her parents for the weekend and she was alone. She cried and told Lee about the breakup, explaining it was just time, and it was for the best, but sounding heartbroken and lost. She stopped talking for a minute, unable to speak through the tears and he wanted to tell her. “Crystal” he whispered, “I’m OK,” she replied, and he could hear her smile through the tears and the moment was gone.
20 minutes later Lee was standing on Crystal’s doorstep, banging on the door and shuffling his feet. The door swung open and he was greeted by a thoroughly confused looking Crystal. “I love you,” he said, pulling her into a kiss, and the moment was just beginning.
