I've heard "Impossible Germany" by Wilco twice when I've gone into Publix to withdraw money from the ATM. At first I just laughed. "This is the gentrification of indie music," I thought to myself.

Then I thought about it. How sad is it that Publix is playing better music than any radio station in Atlanta?

Now it's not funny. It's just sad.

It's someone's job to choose which songs get played in their stores. I wonder how that works.

Whoever they are, they're doing a better job than most radio station program directors. 99x went downhill because their one concept of new music was horse-screeching emo - and when, surprise surprise, that didn't appeal to their nearing-their-thirties audience, they hopped right back to playing Candlebox and all sorts of other stuff we heard 50 times a day in the 90s.

There is GREAT music being made these days, but god forbid Atlanta radio find out about it.

Music on the radio in Detroit is still mostly terrible but they did a few things to kind of make it better. Originally, we had 89X which is basically the same thing as 99x. A bunch of people from 89X decided to start a new station called The River. The River stays away from the nu-metal and screamo shit or whatever the hell the kids with dyed black hair listen to these days and plays SOME good music. There's a pretty big variety as well. You'll get a lot of older, classic-ish rock and then newer indie music. I've heard Ryan Adams, Wilco, Band of Horses, Jenny Lewis, The Decemberists, and a bunch of other music we like on there. Granted, you'll probably get one good song for every 5 or 6 songs they play but it's still the best thing we have going radio-wise.

That being said, I'm glad my car has a port for my iPod.

The River we have in Atlanta is basically just classic rock. If they don't play Boston every hour you've accidentally changed the channel.

I don't have the iPod port, just a tape adapter.

I would say that it's really sad that college students can play better music than professionals, but I suppose it isn't. Once it stops being a love and starts being a business they'll just play whatever crap sells.

Never stop being a college kid, at least at heart. It makes you awesome.
