I really like this. I especially like the opening line (the sword image is appropriate for all that hinges on the ride) and the description of Betriz's physical exhaustion against her determination to continue on.

Thank you! I was actually thinking of Theoden's line in Return of the King about riding for a red dawn or something along those lines, so I'm really glad that idea came across in this!

Lovely descriptions of physical exhaustion and the glimpse of a sunrise that gives so much hope. And it says such a lot about Betriz and Cazaril, that both will risk all for those they serve and love. My favourite line is the one about Iselle looking as if she could do it all again if needs be - like a true Royina. :D

This prompt had me quite stumped for a while, so I'm really pleased you feel I pulled it off and conveyed a sense of all that's at stake for this journey. (Especially since my memory of the book's a bit sketchy!) Thanks for your lovely comments. :)

Oh, what a fantastic use of this prompt!

The language and imagery here are so vivid, and Betriz's determination is absolutely palpable. I also like the way she sees the physical challenge of their overnight ride as a way of understanding an inkling of what Caz has been through.

And by the gods, Betriz dy Ferrej will be free, too. To serve her Lady. To marry Caz. -- Love that line, which is perfectly Betriz, fierce and determined under her gentleness.

Aw, thank you! This prompt really had me stumped at first, but it also had me thinking of that quote from LotR about riding for the red dawn, and eventually my imagination got on board and took me to Iselle and Betriz's night right. I'm so pleased you think I've captured her several likely trains of thought. Once I got going with this one, it was one of my favorites to write!
