Oh FFS. I haven't had anything to do with Guides since 1986 and I still want to smack her round her fool head with a tentpeg... oh, it's Yvonne Roberts.
I once met Yvonne Roberts, about fifteen years ago, at a reading of a book she'd co-authored with some dreadful old man in a too-tight shirt whose name I am totally blanking on though I think he was once on Have I Got News For You, and she was rabbiting on about how dull and unwilling to rush out and change the world the young were then, as well.
I suspect it's part of that bizarre mindset some baby-boomers are prone to, that goes 'We're young and iconoclastic! Everyone must take notice of us because we're young and iconoclastic! Oh, hang on, actually we're pushing into our 50s and 60s. Well, if we pretend that the young are an undifferentiated mass of boring stiffs played by Julia Sawalha in a beige cardigan, we get to continue to pat ourselves on the back and berate them in the media! Result!'
She needs a good Tippetting, frankly. The hippos are on their way.
She is complaining that girls and young women want to develop skills for healthy independent responsible living? Golly, well isn't that just hideous. I mean, think about how we are constantly being told the young do not have any life-skills, don't know how to cook or budget or cope without their mobile phones. And members of Girlguiding UK want to be different? Well that's clearly just not on...

I particualrly like the part where learning to use a map and compass is "horizon limiting" *rolls eyes*
Your comment was very polite and restrained in the circumstances!

I wonder if she ever got to be a Guide, maybe she's bitter?
