Working three jobs just to stay in debt now...

My unemployment check varies based upon how much money I earn from my part time jobs, substitute teaching and tutoring. The more money I earn from other jobs, the less I get from unemployment. The less I earn per week from unemployment, the longer I can keep collecting it ( Read more... )

I was on unemployment a while for the last year, and had nearly the exact opposite experience. All other things being equal, my unemployment check was enough for rent and food, provided I lived spartan-ly. So it was a fairly enormous disincentive to actually get off my ass and do anything. I basically took a summer off courtesy of a weekly check from the government.

Also, hi.

Assuming that I work at least two days as a sub or at least nine hours as a tutor per week, I earn about the same as I would earn as a teacher. I'm taking this time to get better at classroom management, my weakness, by putting myself into the most difficult classroom situation: subbing. Last week, I got called in every day, and only didn't work on Tuesday because my phone's ringer was off and it didn't wake me up. I'm getting a lot of practice, and I have to believe that I'm getting better.

I field for unemployment, but my check will not arrive before Nov. 16. How does it work? What determines the amount of money received? What masters program are you looking into? ANd why aren't you a professor yet? Dammit Stu! :-)

Unemployment pays you 50% of the average amount you earned in your best two quarters over the past year and a half. The way it was set up, I didn't do as well as I could have, but I'll survive. In addition to the money they send you, you can also earn up to 1/3 of the amount they send you per week from other sources without affecting your unemployment. If you work more than that, then they will deduct the amount over from your payment that week, and hold onto it until the end.

That means that, unless you don't get a part time job to keep you sane while you're on unemployment, you will never earn less than 2/3 what you were earning before. For me, that's enough to live on. If you earn more than 4/3 the unemployment check, you earn nothing from unemployment that week, as you are considered to be working full time.

Yea, I am getting $200 a week, but I forgot to call in Sunday and I start subbing this week. Great.
