I think a lot of the nerdfury over the Sword & Sorcery edition of Gamma World came about because WoTC had recently dropped the Alternity line, and that version of Gamma World had some quite serious potential to be an excellent science fiction game. It was probably the least gonzo of any of the editions of the rules.
But then we've always played Gamma World as a serious science fiction game (albeit with amusing incidents), set quite some time after the apocalypse. Civilization (and the problems therein are returning to the world(s)), and most people know how to use the technology they discover, but don't generally know how to make the technology and survive off surviving caches. Add in aliens with fully functioning tech, bioengineered anthropomorphic animals, designer retroviruses (the sources of mutations rather than radiation), and the occasional functioning computer system...
